small_002.jpgKakheti Region – After the Moldova campaign of 2006 Milieukontakt starts to repackage old stocks of pesticides in the Kakheti region of Georgia. Trained by experts from the Dutch engineering company Tauw a local team of individuals have repackaged approximately 80 tons of old stocks and transported some 100 tons of less hazardous waste to a dumpsite.

Old stocks of pesticides are threatening public health and the environment in almost every former Soviet country. Most of the time these so called ‘obsolete pesticides’ are kept badly maintained hangars. small_001.jpgSometimes the local population has taken the hangars even apart. Thus leaving the heavily toxic pesticides lay around in the open air and consequently they are leaking into the underground water.

The Moldova and Georgia repackaging campaign have been organised within the framework of the project “Elimination of the acute risks of obsolete pesticides in Moldova, Georgia and Kyrgyzstan.” In Kyrgyzstan repackaging has been planned for late August Early September.
