Repackaging Oshrepack KgRepakaging obsolete pesticides in the former Soviet cotton fields of Kyrgyzstan

Osh Region – After the Moldova campaign of 2006 and the Georgia Campaign of May 2008 Milieukontakt starts to repackage old stocks of pesticides in the Osh region of Kyrgyzstan. Trained by experts from the Dutch engineering company Tauw and the Hungarian Agruniver Holding a local team from the Kyrgyz Emergency Ministry has repackaged approximately sixty tons of old stocks and transported them to a renovated store.

Old stocks of pesticides are threatening public health and the environment in almost every former Soviet country. Most of the time these so called ‘obsolete pesticides’ are kept badly maintained hangars. Sometimes the local population has taken the hangars even apart. Thus leaving the heavily toxic pesticides lay around in the open air and consequently they are leaking into the underground water.
